Lathes and Drills

  1. Lathe

    • Parts
      • Chuck
        • Holds the material in place.
        • 4-jaw
          • Holds the material in place whilst making it accurate
        • 3-jaw
      • Gear Levers
        • Engages and disengages the back gears.
      • Cross Slide
        • Allows facing operations to be preformed
        • Rides on the carriage.
      • Tailstock
        • Used to apply support.
        • If not used chatter can be caused on the work-piece.
      • Saddle
        • The casting that fits onto the top of the bed and slides along it is known, almost universally, as the "Saddle" - a self-explanatory and very suitable term.
      • Leadscrew
        • Runs along the side of the bed
        • Long threaded rod
    • What does it do?
      • Makes circular based objects.
      • Uses materials such as steel and plastics.
      • There are 2 kinds of lathe. Manual lathes and CNC lathes (computerised)
        • CNC lathes are programmed to do a job. They are perfect for mass production.
        • A manual lathe is less accurate and human error is a high possibility. However, they are perfects for making a single item
    • Engine Lathe
    • Bench Lathe
    • Centre Lathe
  2. Drills

    • Drill Bits
      • Counter Sink
        • A tip that matches the bottom angle of a flathead wood screw
        • Creates a starting hole for your screw.
        • A fluted countersink tool
      • Spade Bit
        • Flat, steel bits with an extremely sharp point.
        • Very Fragile
      • Twist Bit
        • The most commonly used drill bit.
        • Is commonly made from HSS or carbon steel
        • Drills metals and wood but tend to go off point when drilling wood due to the flat angled tips.
        • Hardened twist bit and Pexiglas (plastic)
      • Auger Bit
        • Like twist bits with deeper flutes.
        • You will use this if you want a more pricise hole
        • Some have screw points
    • Hand Drill
      • A manual drill
      • A handle that you twist in order to create a hole
      • A drill bit can be placed in the chuck.
    • Bench Drill
      • Similar to a standing drill
      • Sits on a workbench
      • A power tool
    • Rachet Brace
      • A manual drill.
      • Drills Bigger holes than a hand drill.
      • A drill bit can be placed in the chuck.
    • Standing Drill
      • Similar to a bench drill
      • Stands by itself
      • Larger than a bench drill.
  3. Vocab

    • CNC- Computer numerical control
    • Drill bit flute- The flute is a deep groove in a drill bit.
    • HSS- High Speed Steel
    • Carbon Steel- Steel that is a combination of two elements, iron and carbon
    • A Drill Bit- An attachment of a drill. Comes in many different sizes.
    • The carriage - The saddle, apron, cross slide and top
    • The Compound- The cross slide and the top
