Plate Tectonics Mind Map

  1. Alfred Wegener:

    • In 1915, he made his first theory.
    • In 1912, Alfred Wegener wrote his first boook and published "The Origin of Continents and Oceans."
  2. Plate Tectonics

    • The Earth's surface is made up of stiff rock slabs, or plates, that move in relation to one another.
    • Convection, or heat transfer generated by the motion of a heated magma fluid in the Earth's interior, causes plate movement.
    • Three plates influence Guatemala, which are: the North American Plate, the Caribbean Plate, and the Copos Plate.
  3. Spreading of the Seafloor

    • The ocean floor was the first piece of evidence.
    • As you get further away from the mid-ocean ridge, the thickness of the sediment layer and the ocean floor rise.
    • The process of new oceanic crust forming along a mid-ocean ridge while older oceanic crust moves away from it.
  4. Harry Hess

    • He was on a mission to investigate the innermost layer of the sea floor.
    • In 1960, he suggested that continent movement was caused by seafloor spreading.
    • Was an American geologist and a United States Navy officer in World War II who is considered one of the "founding fathers" of the unifying theory of plate tectonics.
