Software Development Strategies

  1. Extreme Programming

    • Improve software quality and responsiveness to changing customer requirements.
    • A form of agile programming:
    • +VE's
      • Really fast way of designing an application.
      • Tends to be cheaper than other development strategies, as the feedback is incorporated during developmental stage instead of when an initial prototype is released.
    • -VE's
      • Many small releases in a small amount of time-lots of iterations- meaning a lot of stress and pressure to meet short deadlines.
      • Focusses on code aspect rather than design
      • Requires teamwork, constant review, so if your clients aren't nearby, deadlines may not be met in time.
  2. Agile Programming

    • Meaning you are flexible to changes, or suggestions from your clients on how to improve your software.
    • +VE's
    • -VE's
  3. What they all have in common

    • Analyse
      • See what is needed in the new prototype, this can be from client responses to make the software easier to use.
    • 2. Design
    • 3. Implementation
      • Code and test
    • 4. Evaluation
      • See what went well, what could be improved, this generates the analysis key targets for the next 'iteration'
    • Iterations combine the 4 main elements of software development
      • These can last
  4. Waterfall

    • User involvement
      • Limited. Only at the analysis and evaluation stage.
    • Origins
      • Each step has targets to achieve before moving onto the next step.
      • From the manufacturing industry
    • Benefits and drawbacks
      • Is still a popular approach to software development, but there are better models out there now such as agile programming
  5. Spiral

    • Very similar to waterfall, many different prototypes are created until the end product is finished.
    • Intentions of what the software will do are set out at the beginning and an intiial prototype is formed. Each new prototype is refined.
    • Uses
      • Used for larger projects, that take many years to implement and complete.
