Map content

current model of the atom

  1. Nucleus

    • It is tiny but makes up most of the mass.
    • contain protons (relative charge +1) (relative mass is 1)
    • contains neutrons (relative charge 0) (relative mass 1)
    • the radius is about 10,000 times smaller than the atom's radius
    • number of protons = number of electrons
  2. Atom

    • Mostly empty space
  3. Electrons

    • If they gain energy (absorbing radiation) they move to a higher energy level, further from the nucleus
    • If they release radiation then they move to a lower energy level, closer to the nucleus
    • If one or more outer electrons leave the atom, the atom becomes positively charged
    • relative charge -1
    • relative mass 0
