   • automatic line numbering

   • software that allows editors to write and edit code

2. error diagnostics

   • helps programmers locate and fix errors
   • breakpoints enable a program to be paused or stopped at predetermined points
   • variable tracking lets the programmer see the changing variable as a program runs
   • error trapping pinpoints exactly where a syntax error occours

3. run time environment

   • a special that allows a program to run on a computer even if not designed to run on it
   • creates a virtual machine in order to run s program
   • allows a programmer to code a program without having to know how different computer systems work

4. translator

   • Converts a high level language ie source code into object code
     • three types of translators
       • interpreter (one line at a time)
       • compiler(all lines at once)
       • assembler(assembly code to machine code)

5. purpose

   • To help coders write a clear, maintainable code, various codes exist

     • some or all of these tools are gathered together in software known as IDE
