WORD ORDER AND COGNATES

  1. Word order refers to the way words are arranged in a sentence. But the order depends of the language.

    • Order in English
      • The standard word order in English is: Subject + Verb + Object.
        • Word order patterns in English
          • 1- Normal word order. 2- Inverted word order. 3- Word order of direct and indirect object.
          • KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER:
            • Adjectives often come before the noun.
            • The adverb is placed at the beginning of the sentence before the subject, but the subject still comes before its verb.
            • English word order is strict and not very flexible. This means that the order of words in an English sentence rarely changes: the subject almost always comes before the predicate.
        • EXAMPLES OF CONSIDERATIONS
          • Expressions of time can be put at the beginning or end of the sentence. (Time) / Subject / Verb / Indirect Object / Direct Object / Purpose / Place / (Time) EXAMPLE: Michael tell his students some wonderful stories every day.
          • Move from specific to general when there are more than two expressions of time or place. EXAMPLE: I will be in the park at 8:00 am on Friday.
