Bone anatomy. Bone is made up of compact bone, cancellous bone, and bone marrow.
- Compact bone forms the outer layer of bone.
- Cancellous bone is found mostly at the ends of bones and contains red marrow.
- The bone marrow is in the center of most bones and has many blood vessels.
There are two types of bone marrow: red and yellow.
- Red marrow contains blood stem cells that can develop into red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets.
- The yellow marrow is made up, for the most part, of fat.
Bone tissue is a variety of specialized connective tissue, in which the extracellular matrix is mineralized, which gives it the hardness and resistance characteristic of this tissue.
- The bone matrix contains type I collagen, type V collagen, glycosaminoglycans, glycoproteins, and sialoproteins.
