Authentic Assessments for Emergent Bilinguals
  1. Traditional Assessments vs. Authentic Assessments
    1. Traditional Assessments
      1. teacher led - student recall of skills; fill in the blank, multiple choice; true false; matching; does not show depth of student understanding *these assessments show some indication of what students know throughout the year, but do not always allow for student's progress to be shown
      2. Authentic Assessments
        1. student focused - applying skill to a task or scenario; directly shows EB student understanding *these assessments allow for ongoing assessment of student understanding and progress
      3. Why use Authentic Assessments?
        1. These assessments allow for EB students to show their learning in a student's own way; focuses on student learning the content rather than just basic recall; allow EB students multiple opportunities to show what they know
        2. Steps to Create an Authentic Assessment
          1. 1. Identify the Standards in student friendly language
            1. 2. Select an appropriate task
              1. 3. Identify criteria to assess
                1. 4. Create a rubric to adequately assess the learning target

                  2. student begins in ones place; student shows model of work; student generates correct answer
                  3. have students subtract two digit numbers using previously taught strategies (ex: place value, decompose, number line, etc.)
                  4. example: "student will accurately subtract two digit numbers without regrouping"
                2. Good Criteria for an Authentic Assessment
                  1. criteria on assessments should be: measurable or observable; brief and clear; student friendly; limited, essential elements assessed
                    1. ensure that the students understand the criteria being assessed and make sure that the criteria is necessary to assess
                  2. Assessing ELs Content Knowledge
                    1. Students whose English is still developing can show what they know for content standards by using informal/authentic assessments
                      1. Students can create diagrams/exhibits, use graphic organizers, drawings, etc. to prove their knowledge in certain areas
                        1. Students can work independently or in groups to create a product or demonstrate understanding
                          1. Students should be assessed in the language they were taught, despite their native language
                          2. Possible Authentic Assessments
                            1. Pizza Fractions - students use pizza topics to create pizzas and correlate the proper fraction
                              1. Reader's Theatre to assess Oral Reading fluency
                                  1. Using a Graphic Organizer to draw the beginning, middle, end of a story
                                      1. Create a restaurant menu to assess understanding of Money; utilize it as a tool to make purchases and make change
                                          1. allow students to orally read words along with dictating words with same phonics pattern; use anecdotal notes as supplementary assessment
