The CPU- What you need to know
- State the purpose of the CPU Describe the function of the CPU as fetching and executing instructions stored in the memoryExplain how common characteristics of CPUs such as clock speed, cache size and number of cores affect their performance.
Types
- RISC
- reduced instruction set computing, more efficient than CISC at doing simple tasks as the instruction set is much smaller
- CISC
- complex instruction set computing, a more complex type of CPU used in laptops and desktops
- RISC
Parts of
- Control Unit
- controls the data flow of the cpu
- Aritimatic and Logic unit
- Performs mathematical and logical equations
- Immediate access store
- Also known as Ias. This is the closest store of information the cpu has
- Control Unit
Factors that effect performance
- Cache size
- If cache size is larger, the CPU doesn't have to look as far for data to process
- Clock speed
- if you increase this the CPU is forced to do the fetch decode execute cycle more times per second
- Cores
- if there are more cores the CPU can process more data at once
- What is Benchmarking
- Testing the Hardware to see if it reaches a certain standard
- Cache size
Purpose
- Fetch- Decode- Execute cycle
- Fetches data
- Decodes data
- Execute instructions
- Brain of the computer
- The purpose of the CPU is to process data
- Fetch- Decode- Execute cycle
Information
- Description
- Use this mind map as a starting point. Add at least one branch to each point to explain either what this means or why this is important for the CPU and its performance.
