1. Artificial Selection

   • The act of Artificially giving something desirable traits
   • Selective Breeding
     • Choosing parents with particular characteristics to breed together to make offspring with the desired traits
     • One pro of selective breeding is more food production
       • One con of Selective breeding is it decreases genetic diversity
   • Gene Therapy
     • To correct faulty genes or treat; prevent disease
     • One pro of gene therapy is it can prevent or cure diseases
       • One con of gene therapy is dangerous and a difficult process
   • Genetic Modification
     • The process of altering the genetic make up of an organism to improve the organisms desirable traits
     • One pro of GMO is one can develop new drugs
       • One con of GMO is GMO is very unnatural

2. Natural Selection

   • Favored traits in a species become more common over many generations while less favored traits become eliminated as those organisms die off.
   • Adaptations
     • Characteristics that help an organism to survive in an environment
   • Mutations
     • Mutations are changes in the DNA that may or may not affect a organisms phenotype
   • Three things must be present for Natural Selection to occur: existence, variation, and inheritance
     • ex.) Peppered Moths adapting to their new environment by turning darker to match the threes
