   • can see almost as well as an adult - their visual memory is very good : they may find things that an adult has mislaid
   • know and respond immediately ti their own name , and recognise familiar sounds and voices

2. physical gross motor

   • can rise to a sitting position from lying down
   • can stand alone for a few moments
   • can rise standing without help from furniture or people
   • can 'cruise' along using furniture as a support

3. physical fine motor

   • an relise a small object into someonse hand
   • drop and throw toys deliberately - and look to see were they have fallen
   • build with a few bricks and arrange toys on the floor

4. social/emotional

   • are still shy with strangers
   • are affectionate towards familiar people
   • carry dolls or teddies by their limbs , hair or clothing

5. cognitive/language

   • use trail -and- error methods to learn about objects
   • understand the name of various parts of the body
   • identify pictures of a few named object
