   • decode
     • thedata is decoded to find out what it is
   • execute
     • the arithmetic logic unit does what the instruction tells it to then reapeats the cycle
   • fetch
     • the adress bus carries information to the memory address register
   • memory address register [MAR]
   • memory data register[MDR]
   • program counter [PC]
   • accumulator [AC]
   • arithmetic/logic unit [ALU]
   • control unit [CU]
   • performance of the cpu
     • clock speed
       • the amount of fetch decode execute cycles a computer can run in a second, usually measured in megahertz [MHz] or gigahertz [GHz]
     • cores
       • CPU's with multiple cores have more power to run multiple programs at the same time
     • cache size
       • the entire computer will run faster if more data can be held in the cache
