computer systems: computer structure

1. input

   • Input is data that a computer receives. This is done by the user using input devices
   • Input devices are used by the user to give commands and instructions to the computer system, telling it what to do
   • input devices include
     • Keyboard
     • Mouse
     • Touchscreen
     • microphone

   • Random Access Memory
   • This is temporary memory used to store programs and data while open and in use, including the operating system
   • The contents of RAM can be changed
   • RAM is deleted when the computer is switched off

4. ROM

   • read only memory
   • This is permanent memory; its contents cannot be deleted
   • As it is read only nothing can be written to ROM or changed by the user

   • it is permanent storage which can also be edited
   • This is the type of memory a user would use to store their programs and data
   • Backing storage has slower access speeds compared to main memory. Each different backing storage device has different speeds

7. translators

   • interpreter
     • translates and runs code
   • compiler
     • translates whole file code
