Thin Notes A1

  1. Multifunctional devices

    • Could also be known as All In One devices (AIO)
    • MFDs could contain a printer, scanner and a fax machine.
  2. Differences between buying a desktop and a laptop

    • Desktop is not portable but has more storage, faster and better specs and is customisable and has a larger screen.
    • Laptops are portable but they have less storage, slower and worse specs, they are hard to customise and have a smaller screen
  3. Internal PC components

    • Motherboard - the backbone of the computer that brings everything together
    • Central Processing unit - Acts as the control centre
    • Random Access Memory - Computers short term memory
    • Hard disk drive - used as storage with moving parts so it is slower
    • Solid state drive - used as quicker storage then HDD because of no moving parts
    • Power supply unit - they convert power for the computer to use
  4. Mainframes and supercomputers

    • Mainframes - Mainframes go through 1000s of transactions per second, for instance, Bank Transactions
    • Supercomputers - Supercomputers use lots of power to calculate a single calculation, for instance, scientific calculations
  5. System-on-chip - Usually contain internal components like CPU, RAM and a battery. Because of these being so close together the processing speed is increased because the signal has less space to travel.

  6. Peer-to-peer network - a group of computers that are linked to gather with equal permissions and responsibilities.

  7. Client/server network - where computers are linked together through a central server.

  8. Server - A computer or computer program which manages access to a centralised resource or service in a network

  9. Infrastructure - the components required to operate and manage enterprise IT environments

  10. The cloud - A computer that belongs to someone else that is accessed over the internet and designed to securely store software and information
