Types of Operating Systems (OS)
Batch Processing
- A learge amount of identically formatted data is collected over a period of time
- Output does not have to be done immediately
- Human inervention is not necessary
- The data requires similar processing
- It is then processed at a suitable time often late night or an a weekend when user involvement is not required
- Examples
- Payroll for employees in a business
- Bills from customer records e.g. water, electricity
Real Time
- Examples
- Killing someone on Lol and then them dying at the moment you kill them. Without real time they wouldn't die, or it'd have taken a lot longer.
- ORDERING SYSTEM Booking tickets for a concert has to be real time since other people would be buying tickets and if they weren't real time then people would be sending money on tickets that are not there or have been already sold
- A real time system is one where the processing is done quickly enough to affect the next input or process to be carried out
- Examples
Single User
- A single User OS is one that will only allow a single user to use the computer at any one time
- This is like your machine at home. DON'T confuse it with the machine only having one user. You could have several people using your computer at home but not at the same time
- Think about it, While on the internet, could your friends be playing a game ?
- Description of a Single User OS
- Allows one user at a time to use the system
- Allocates each user with rights
- To remember this just remember what your OS does. You can have a log in for you and your family, you cannot see their files and they cannot see yours, you have to login with a username and password
- Keeps the user files seprate
Multi User
- Allows more than one user to use its services simultaneously
- Description
- This has a single computer which is connected up to a number of terminals
- These terminals are not computers as you know them on a network but are limited machines with minimal processing power
- Each terminal is given a time slice. Each time slice is very small (1/100 of a second)
- Uses flags to identify something needs processing
- Terminals are given priotries/privilegs
- Data is separated, security is essential as all data is on same machine therefore user rights are set up
- Examples of use include
- Supermarket Check out System
- Online Gaming
- Mainframe serving many terminals
