Databasing and Security and Privacy of Data

  1. Self-Determined Criteria

    • Create a platform that is able to secure my customer data whilst including security measures that makes passwords more difficult to access.
      • All passwords must be hashed and potentially use SALT
      • Create a database that securely stores information
      • Use caser cipher for encrypting user data
  2. Prescribed Criteria

    • You must use 4 different data types in your table
      • Create a database for customer information in digital marketing
      • Table must include a minimum of 4 different data types
      • Create a table
      • The data types used will be DATE, varchar, integer, float and char
    • You must have 1 column that uses Hashing to securely store that information
      • A combination of SALT and hashing will be utilised for the passwords
      • All information must be securely stored in the database
      • All passwords must be hashed
      • At least one column in the table must contain passwords
    • You must have 1 column that uses Caesar Cipher to store secret information
      • Caesar cipher must be used to secure this information
      • The database must have at least one column that uses Caesar cipher
      • We must provide a way to store sensitive information securely
      • The secret information must be retrievable
    • Your database must have at least 5 records
      • All of the records must be unique
      • A minimum of 5 records is required in the database
      • A minimum of 5 records is required in the database
      • Some records must be hashed as well as with SALT in order to be secure
  3. Security Measures

    • Hashing
      • A process of converting data of arbitrary size or length into a fixed-length string of characters (typically representing the original data in a sequence of numbers and letters).
        • e.g. "0c87ed818fb90f3f88faa6b362cf1e99025f3c1248f8fe513cdb38d03d9dce65"
    • Caesar Cipher
      • A method of encrypting messages by shifting the letters of the alphabet by a fixed number of places.
        • e.g. "Hello" becomes "Khoor" by using a shift of 3
    • SALT
      • Is a random string of characters that is added to the input of a hash function to create a unique and irreversibly encrypted output.
        • e.g. "2fb1c196ca6c6a9108e4ac27f752d9222e8a8332ef1c4f4d47dd2648edd9f363fb4cb32b10ce62e2e126cec29045ede3671b58fc71d9a98a76e611fb9d44aa9e
  4. User Persona Data Requirements

    • goals
      • Use a platform that can safely store my data
        • Create a database that securely stores information
    • needs and expectations
      • Private data being safely stored with only him being able to properly access the info.
        • Use a variation of hashing and SALT, as well as Caeser cipher for encrypting the data.
    • frustrations
      • Risk of data being breached and loss of information as it is unsecure
        • Security measures can be implemented to ensure the safety of the data
  5. Data Types

    • VARCHAR
      • Used to store character string of variable length but a maximum of the set length specified
        • e.g. "raspberry@gmail"
    • CHAR
      • It is a fixed-length character data type used to store text data
        • e.g. "ABCD"
    • Float
      • Used to store approximate numeric values including decimal values. The values stored in a FLOAT column are not exact but are close approximations of the actual values
        • e.g. "9.1"
    • Boolean
      • Represents a logical data type that evaluates to one of two possible values: TRUE, FALSE
        • e.g. "WHERE AGE > 22; {Boolean expression - > (AGE > 22)}'
    • Interger
      • Used to store whole numbers without any fractional part.
        • e.g. "15"
    • DATE
      • Stores Dates in the format 'YYYY-MM-DD'
        • e.g. "1987-08-21"
    • TIME
      • Stores time values in the format HH:MM: SS.
        • e.g. "18:27:00" represents 6:27pm
  6. Suggested Data Dictionary Attributes

      • It is the standard language used to interact with relational databases. It allows users to store, retrieve, update and manage data efficiently through simple commands.
        • e.g. CREATE TABLE Employees ( ID INT PRIMARY KEY, Name VARCHAR(50), Age INT );
    • Python
      • Python is a set of instructions that we give in the form of a Program to our computer to perform any specific task. It is a Programming language having properties like it is interpreted, object-oriented and it is high-level too.
        • e.g. print("Hello World")
      • It is used in all kinds of development from game development, basic programming, and scripting to large and complex software development.
