Y9 Item 2

  1. Existing text based adventure games

    • Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy
      • A frustrating science fiction space escape game based off of the book "Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy"
        • Strengths
          • Immersive storytelling that expands the universe entirley.
          • includes highly creative, text-driven puzzle mechanics.
        • Weaknesses
          • Solutions often require frustrating, trial-and-error thinking.
          • The game frequently kills players without warning.
    • Forests of lyrica
      • A fantasy adventure game where players search for a missing girl in magical woodlands.
        • Strengths
          • There is a clear goal/motive throughout the entire game.
          • immersive gameplay that's smooth and flows well.
        • Weaknesses
          • High difficulty can make navigation frustratingly confusing.
          • he lack of visual mapping makes tracking locations difficult.
  2. Algorithm Constructs

    • Sequence
      • Refers to a set of instructions that are processed one after the other.
        • DECLARE count SET count TO 1 OUTPUT the value of count
    • Assignment
      • Assignment is storing a value in a variable.
        • DECLARE studentName SET studentName TO Bob
    • Selection and Condition
      • A selection statement uses a condition to select which line of the program will be used next.
        • CALCULATE totalCost IF (totalCost > $10) THEN OUTPUT 'no delivery charge' ELSE OUTPUT '$5 delivery charge' ENDIF OUTPUT 'thankyou'
    • Iteration
      • Iteration is also called repetition and is used when something is repeated, so anything where the program goes round in a loop. In pseudocode we add repetitions using a FOR loop, or a WHILE loop.
        • DECLARE count SET count TO 0 FOR count = 1 to 10 OUTPUT count END FOR OUTPUT ‘finished’
    • Modularisation
      • Modularisation is used to reduce the complexity of a system by deconstructing it into independent units or modules.
        • FUNCTION delivery_charge CALCULATE totalCost IF (totalCost > $10) THEN OUTPUT ‘no delivery charge’ ELSE OUTPUT ‘$5 delivery charge’ ENDIF OUTPUT ‘thankyou’ END FUNCTION
  3. Coding constructs

    • IF Statements
      • if statements are used in Python to perform conditional execution of code. It allows you to specify one or more condition.
        • if condition: # code to be executed if condition is True
    • FOR Loops
      • A FOR loop is a common control structure in Python that allows you to repeat a block of code a specific number of times.
        • inventory = ['torch', 'key', 'map', 'rope', 'potion'] for item in inventory: print(item)
  4. Ideas for story

    • player name tracker
      • At the start of the game, it will ask and track the players name for the rest of the game.
        • player_name = input("Please enter your name: ")
    • age tracker
      • The game will ask for the players age at the start of the game in order for them to play.
        • age = int(input("Please enter your REAL age: "))
    • Add a player inventory
      • The players inventory will contain items and be used throughout the game.
        • inventory = ['astronaut suit', 'machete', 'rations']
  5. Self-Determined Criteria

    • There will be a working age tracker.
      • The age tracker will have 2 responses
      • The age tracker will form a response when variable is typed
      • The response is determined whether you are over or under 17
    • You must create an outer space SCI-FI themed adventure game.
      • The adventure game will be first set deep in outer space with science fiction elements like the spaceship the Z-700 turbo.
      • The main plot of the storyline will involve sci-fi themed objectives like exploring unexplored planets and discovering extraterrestrial life.
      • The players inventory will include science fiction themed equipment such as a futuristic astronaut suit, and a laser weapon known as the Zy rifle.
  6. Prescribed Criteria

    • Your story must have at least 10 different variables in total
      • I will have 10 variables in total.
      • The variables will be directly linked to my text-based adventure game.
      • One variable will be a working player name and age throughout the game.
    • You must have at least two choices for each input
      • The choices in the game will be relevant to the theme of my text-based adventure game.
      • Some of the choices will be linked to deciding to go to different areas in the game.
      • Some of the choices will lead to the player losing the game/not achieving their main objective.
    • You must use a WHILE loop
      • The WHILE loops will be continuously used to prompt the player until they enter a legitimate option to continue with the game
      • When the player types a valid choice, a break statement will stop the while loop from infinitely asking the same question.
    • You must use variables that match your storyline
      • I will use descriptive variable names that straightforwardly relate to the science fiction, space themed storyline.
      • Variables such as inventory, player name, and age will be used to store the players data.
      • The choices for each input will be in an appropriate theme like suit_choice, shoot_choice, and fight_or_save to keep the code logical.
