Year 9: Unit 2 Digital Solutions

  1. Algorithm Constructs

    • Select And Condition
      • a condition is a test that results in true or false, and selection is the tool used to make a decision based on that test.
        • if item == "Burger Combo": return "Burger Combo ready soon!" else: return "Please place your order"
    • Modularaisation
      • splitting your code into separate files
        • It imports the tool from the other file but it must be in the same folder
    • Assignment
      • storing a value inside a variable.
        • game_score = 100
    • Interation
      • repeating a block of code multiple times, commonly referred to as a loop.
        • FOR 3 dots  MOVE forward ENDfor
    • Sequence
      • category of data types that represents an ordered collection of items
        • fruits = ["apple", "banana", "cherry", "date"]
  2. Existing Text Based Adventure Games

    • The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
      • An difficult sci-fi game where you type text commands to help Arthur Dent survive the destruction of Earth.
        • Uses Simple yet effective variable names to ensure that it is working as excepted
        • Doesn't use modularaisation to ensure that the user's information is kept so if the user is back again they will have to restart
    • Forest of Lyrica
      • An browser-based fantasy adventure where you explore a magical forest using a simple button interface to manage items and progress without typing commands.
        • The code is very clear and easy to understand due to the indentation management in the code.
        • some typos in the users answer are able to break the games code and stop it from working due to syntax errors.
  3. Task Requirements

    • Prescribed Criteria
      • Your story must have at least 10 different variables in total
        • Create a Text based Adventure Game Through the use of thoony and the python coding language.
        • The text-based adventure game must contain 10 variables.
        • They must all be unique variables.
      • You must have at least two choices for each input (IE. Yes | No, Left | Right, Buy | Sell)
        • The Story must have user inputs which allows for the user to choose what they would like to happen in the game.
        • The responses must lead the user to different part of the story.
        • The user input must provide at least 2 inputs.
      • You must use a WHILE loop
        • Example: While loops allow the game to continue running until the specific condition is met.
        • The text-based adventure game must contain at least 1 while loop
      • You must use variables that match your storyline
        • The variables must match the storyline, to ensure the perfect experience e.g. for a medieval times-based game Should not variable name spaceship
        • Variables must be named using correct and working pseudocode syntaxes and camel casing when required.
        • For example: boat choice is acceptable, but boat-choice is not acceptable as it does not use pseudocode syntax.
    • Self Determined Criteria
      • Use Ansi Colours to improve the overall theme of the text-based adventure game
        • Include colours such as orange for all user inputs to signal making a decision.
      • Add ASCH Images
        • Images of the village and horses etc. to enhance the overall mood and feel of the game.
      • The story must be based on an outback towns
        • The user is interested in playing a game based on outback towns that both lead in different directions.
  4. Coding Constructs

    • Main Coding Constructs
      • FOR Loop
        • for game = 1, 5 do moveForward() end
      • IF STATEMENT
        • IF life sentence ≥ 18 THEN OUTPUT "You can live." ENDIF
  5. Ideas For Story

    • Use small-town and cowboy slang to make the game more realistic and authentic. - SELECTED
      • using words is one of the best ways to give a more authentic vibe to the user so they can immersed and have the best experience.
        • For Example: 'howdy', 'reckon', 'y'all' and 'skedaddle'.
    • Auction Bid War
      • a fast-paced, high-stakes bidding war where buyers repeatedly raise their offers in a desperate attempt to outbid one another.
        • For Example: walking into an auction at the king's outpost where the buyers are aggresively raising there paddle.
