Capital Punishment

  1. Against Capital Punishment...
    1. The Qur'an says that capital punishment is an option which can be considered, it doesn't have to be used
    2. The Qur'an gives strict conditions under which the death penalty can be given and these are rarely met, so it should not be used
    3. In some countries, Shariah law is not applied properly-such as an unfair trail- and this can be used to oppress people. Women and the poor receive the most sentences of capital punishmenr
      1. This goes against the teachings of Allah
  2. In Favour of Capital Punishment...
    1. The Qur'an (come directly from Allah) says the death penalty may be used
    2. Muhammed made statements to show that he agreed with the death penalty
    3. When he was ruler of Medina, Muhammed sentenced people to death
2. Christianity
  1. In Favour of Capital Punishment...
    1. "Those who live by the sword shall die by the sword"
    2. "Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed"
    3. Humans are made in the image of God and this gives them the right to take life away
    4. By choosing to commit a serious crime, the person has chosen capital punishment
    5. Jesus came to fulfill the law, not change it, and the law at that time involved capital punishment
    6. Governments decide what is best for the safety of the people, this could be capital punishment
  2. Against capital punishment...
    1. God gave life and only God can take life away
    2. Human life is sacred and holy
      1. Sanctity of Life
    3. It goes against the golden rule
      1. Treat others as you wish to be treated
    4. Capital punishment goes against Jesus teaching "Love your neighbour
    5. "But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who punish you"
    6. "But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also"
    7. Church of England Lambeth Conference
      1. "This conference...urges the churches to speak out against all government who practise capital punishment
Drugs and Alcohol
1. Christianity
  1. Against drugs...
    1. Your body is a temple of the holy spirit and should not be interfered with
    2. They are illegal and Christians should accept the authority of government
    3. Drugs may interfere with worship o prayer and prevent a persons relation ship with God
  2. Accept the use of alcohol in moderation...
    1. "This cup is the new covenant in my blood"
    2. Jesus drank and turned water into wine
    3. Alcohol was used in the last supper
      1. Drink this in rememberance of me
  3. Don't accept any alcohol use
    1. The body is a temple of the holy spirit
    2. It may lead to hangovers which might interfere with a persons relationship with God
    3. Drinking alcohol can impair a persons judgement and reduce their ability to act in a Christian way
    4. "Do not get drunk with wine, which will ruin you, but instead be filled with the Holy Spirit"
2. Islam
  1. Alcohol and drugs are both not allowed
    1. "Do not approach prayer whilst you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying"
    2. "Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants"
    3. Prophet Muhamed taught that alcohol was haram (forbidden)
    4. Drugs only spoil a persons relationship with Allah
