Mixtures and Solutions

  1. What are Mixture/Solutions?

    • Lots of substances mixed together is a mixture.
    • E.g. Sea water is made up of salt seaweed sand and water.
    • A solid dissolved in a liquid is a solution. The liquid is the solvent and the solid is the solute.
    • E.g. Salt dissolved in water.
  2. What is a filter and how does it work?

    • A filter works by you putting dirty water for example, through it and clear, purified water should come out with only water in it.
      • The substance left in the filter paper is called the residue and the substance in the conical flask made by the filter paper is the filtrate.
    • Filter paper, a funnel and a conical flask are used to make a lab filter used for experiments.
  3. What is solubility?

    • Solubility is how much of a solute can dissolve in a certain amount of water.
      • You find the solubility of a solute by adding a little bit of it into water until you can see the salt is not dissolving.
        • So you say that this amount of the solute dissolves per this amount of solvent.
    • When a solute dissolves it doesn't go away. You just can't see the solute.
    • The mass of a solution is the mass of a solvent + the mass of a solute.
