Aim
1. Investigate level of obedience p would show when authority figure gives instructions
Participants
1. All Males
2. Aged 40 - 50
3. Obtained from newspaper ads
4. Varied occupations and educational background
Procedure
1. Controlled observation
2. P responded to an ad about memory and learning
3. Controlled observation
4. P respond to an ad about memory and learning
5. Invited to Yale University
6. Paid $4.50 for attending
7. Met by experimenter in a grey lab cat
8. Drew lots to see who would be the learner and the teacher
9. Teacher watches as the learner is strapped to chair with electrodes attached
10. Learner warns about his heart condition
11. Teacher received a sample shock of 40v
12. Teacher was told to test the learner on word pairs
13. If answer is right, say answer and voltage of shock they'll be given
14. Teacher gave shocks when no answer is given
15. Shocks had 15v increments
16. Learner pounded on wall at 300v and at 315v no response
17. End of exp. if p withdrew or p gave 450v
18. P had an interview
19. P met with the learner and was debriefed

1. 65% of p gave 450v

10. P showed nervous stutter, sweating, nervous laughter, tremble
Conclusion
1. Findings demonstrate that ordinary people are astonishingly obedient to authority
2. Not only evil people commit atrocities
3. Indiv. decisions suspended when they find themselves in a subordinate position within a powerful social hierachy
Background
1. Wanted to investigate whether Germans were obedient to authority figures as explanation for the Nazi killing in WW2
