The MSM
Sensory memory
- Duration= Milliseconds
- Capacity= very large
- Encoding= auditory for hearing, visual for sight etc.
STM
- Duration= less than 18 secs
- capacity= limited, 7 +/- 2, or chunks
- Encoding= mainly acoustic
LTM
- coding= mainly semantic
- Capacity= very large
- Duration= potentially forever
Supporting evidence
- Beardsley used brain scanning and found that the prefrontal cortex is active during STM but not LTM tasks= there are seperate stores which operate at different times
- HM, would had his hippocampi removed leading to an inability to transfer STM to LTM but this is a case study so not generalisable
Criticism
- This model is an oversimplified model of memory and the sTM is further subdivided into verbal and visual stores
Attention is when information first arrives at SM and causes info to be transferred to the STM
Rehearsal is how information in retained in the STM or transferred to the LTM
- Verbal maintenance info in STM and increase it then it leads to the transfer from STM to LTM (maintenance rehearsal
