Phonological loop phenomenas

  1. PHONOLOGICAL SIMILARITY EFFECT

    • confusion of letters or words that sound similar.
    • occurs when words are processed in the phonological store
    • Demonstration by R. Conrad (1964)
  2. WORD LENGTH EFFECT

    • occurs when memory for lists of words is better for short words than for long words.
      • it takes longer to rehearse the long words and to produce them during recall.
    • Demo. by Baddeley and coworkers (1984)
  3. ARTICULATORY SUPPRESSION

    • what happens when its operation is disrupted?
    • prevent the individual from rehearsing items sub vocally
      • by repeating an irrelevant sound (ex. the, the, the)
      • EFFECT: Reduces memory
        • WHY? speaking interferes with rehearsal
        • AND delete the word length effect
