Criccieth (hard engineering along coast)

  1. crib wall

    • A timber crib wall and rock armour was built at crichieth in 1997 to protect the coast behind. it cost roughly 450'000, same time of 2012 and has an estimated lifespan of 50 years. it protects 7 small properties and 1 large business costing 1800'000. this would be 2 for every 100 years creating a cost benefit of 2.
  2. breakwater

    • A break water was built in the early 1900s. it cost 500'000 (2012 and protected 1 small property and large business. after being estimated to last for 100 years, it had a total cost benefit of 2.2 making it more effective than the crib wall
  3. Victorian and recurved sea wall

    • A victorian sea wall was built in the 1880s it cost 600'000 to last for 75 years it protected one large beach and had a total cost benefit of 0.8. this was the least effective.
    • A recurved sea wall was also built later in 1993. it cost 1'000'000 but protected no properties behind it. it had an estimated lifespan of 100 years. altogether it had a cost analysis benefit of 1 making it less effective than the timber/ rip rap and the breakwater.
  4. Groynes

    • groynes were built in the 1960s and repaired in 1999. ic cost 20'000 and had an estimated lifespan of 25 years. it protected one large business behind it with a cost benefit 0.12. this is the lowest hard engineering strategy that was built at criccieth.
  5. Do nothing

    • this is one of the only soft engineering strategies at criccieth. it involved leaving the cliff to be eroded. it protected no villages but was about 300 metres from a railway line. in about 100 years this will have to be moved protected or prepared. altogether it had a cost benefit analysis oof 0.
  6. Criccieth is a small town located behind the coast on the lyn penisula. it as a fetch from the SW of 6500 km and prevailing wind from this direction as well. it recieves a great amount of erosion
