Solarisation

  1. Image is completely or partially reversed in tone

    • Dark areas appear light/light areas appear dark.
      • A narrow band or rim of low density is another effect seen in solarised images. It's called the Mackie line, it is formed at the boundaries between highlight and shadow areas that are next to each other. If the film negative is treated, the line is light, which produces a dark line in the print. When the print itself is processed it produces a white/light line around areas of high contrast.
  2. The overexposure effect was first called, "solarisation" by John William Draper

  3. The Black Sun 1955 - Minor White

  4. Black Sun, Owens Valley, California 1939 - Ansel Adams

  5. Methods of producing a "Solaeized" image

    • Exposing a partly developed silver halide image to white light
    • use of chemicals for image reversal
    • usually caused by accidentally exposing an exposed plate or film to light during developing.
    • inverting the images curve layers digitally
  6. It is clear from publications through the 19th century that this effect was invented over and over by many photographers as it normally happens when a light is accidentally switched on in the darkroom while a film or print is being developed

    • Man Ray perfected the technique which was accidentally discovered in his darkroom by his assistant Lee Miller
    • In modern film photography, this effect can be reproduced for artistic effects by briefly exposing the film to light during chemical development. However, because of the speed of modern films, the effect is much more commonly seen in printing.
  7. The technique was discovered accidentally by Man Ray and Lee Miller and quickly adopted by Man Ray as a means to ‘escape from banality’

  8. Solarised Portrait of Lee Miller, 1929 - Man Ray

  9. 1940 - Wynn Bullock

  10. 1h series, 2010 - Hans-Christian Schink
