Material Bonding - Looking at materials from a microscopic view.
Types of bonding:
- Ionic Bonding
- Anion: A material with a negative charge. Cations: A material with a postive charge.
- Covalent Bonding
- Metaliic Bonding
- Ionic Bonding
General Information
- structures of Atoms:Protons carry + charge Neutrons carry no charge Electrons carry - charge
- Atoms will tend towards the most stable structure when the outermost shell is FULL or EMPTY.
- Electrons from metals want to escape and can easily move around this is why they're good conductors.
- If you increase the amount of carbon in a metal then it becomes more brittle, eg; Cast-iron
- By mixing elements together, you can make metals more stronger, eg;Iron + cobalt makes stainless-steel
- Titanium VS Iron: T is lighter, cost more, hard to find, complex maintenance and atoms are not as close together. Whereas Iron is heavier, less strength and closer atoms with less reaction to all condtions.
