Baby highchair

  1. Function

    • The high stool will allow users to not only provide a seat for the baby but also a storage compartment
      • Adding to this the product could be collapsible which allows the user to store the seat in a suitable place. Also with this feature it will make the chair transportable so that he/she can take the chair to any desired location
    • I also intend for my product to have the option of it being constructed into a normal chair by separating the chair legs from the seat itself. This will provide the user with further uses
  2. Materials

    • The product needs to be light but at the same time strong and durable. I could use woods such as oak, pine, beech or even chipboard
      • Also I could use plastics to add style and variety to my product e.g acrylic, HDPE which provides looks and strength to the highchair
    • Mechanisms will have to be looked at e.g. how will the chair fold, lock, how will it come apart
  3. Aesthetics

    • I want it to be inspired by a certain design movement, such as bauhaus, to make the product look highend and aesthetically pleasing
    • I want it to have extravagant colours as the user will be of a very young age and it will make sitting up the table and eating food exciting for the baby
  4. Cost

    • The use of materials will make this product cheap to make as I intend to use materials such as softwoods such as beech, plywoods, chipboards and plastics such as acrylic or HDPE
    • I want the overall product to not be expensive or highend as I intend it to be cheap for my target market who are families who do not have high income or large amounts of storage
  5. Safety

    • The design needs to ensure that the baby can be seated safely into the chair with no safety risks e.g. the baby coming out of the chair, the highchair not being fixed properly etc
    • Measurements must correlate to the size of the baby so that it is not too big for the baby to be loose or not too small for the baby to be uncomfortable
    • Smooth surfaces throughout the product
    • Having a collipsable feature opens up to risks to the user and the baby. The lock mechanisms must be efficient and consistent so that they are not at harm
  6. Environmental

    • Substainability is a key factor when designing and making my product. This can be assured by using soft woods, plywood and, even for some aspects of my chair, chipboard
    • When the product has come to an end of their lifeycle the intended user may wish to dispose of it so I wish to ensure that it can be recycled easily
    • Once it has had its use it can still be used as storage
  7. Ergonomics

    • One of the most important features of the stool; the baby needs to be comfortable enough so that he/she doesn't cause a disruption whilst sitting down because he/she is uncomfortable
    • The product must be easy to use, in this case it should be easy to fold up and store and easy to change into a normal chair
    • It should be kept lightweight as it would be difficult to move around and store if it is too heavy
    • Anthropometric data will be collected for babies between ages 6 months to 4. The highchair must be a suitable height for these ages and size of the baby must be taken into acount
  8. Manufacturing

    • My product could be put together using the flat pack method which make manufacturing my product quicker and more efficient as there wont be many different parts that could increase manufacturing costs
    • The most likely use of production here would possibly be batch production as the parts of the chair can be made and assembled at different stations
