FVD occurs when ECF loss outweighs fluid intake. FVD occurs when water and electrolyte are lost in the same proportion they typically exist.
FVD is not dehydration, which is loss of water alone.

Factors
Annotations:
- Loss of water and electrolytes (Possibly through vomiting, diarrhea, fistulas, fever, excess sweating, burns, blood loss, GI suction, and third space fluid shifts.)
-Decreased intake as in anorexia, nausea, and inability to gain access to excess fluid.
-Diabetes insipidus and uncontrolled diabetes contribute to the depletion of extracellular fluid volume.
