Substitution Steps

1. 1. Find the equation with a variable by itself

   • 2x + 3y= 24 2x + y= 8 * = equation with variable by itself

2. 2. Solve for the variable by itself. (Sometime it is already solved for you.)

   • 2x + y= 8 changes to y= 8 - 2x

3. 3. Substitute or plug in the equation that is solved into the one that isn't.

   • 2x - 3(8 - 2x)= 24

4. 4. Solve this equation and get one of the answers (y or x).

   • 2x - 3(8 - 2x) = 24 ... y = -12

5. 5. Plug your answer from step four into one of your equations (doesn't matter which one)

   • 2(-6) - 3y = 24        Answer: x = -6, y = - 12

6. 6. Solve and get last answer (y or x).
