Mixed numbers
Mixed numbers are things like 3 (1 over 3) with an integer part and a fraction part. Improper fraction are ones where the top number is larger than the bottom one.
Example, Write 4 (2 over 3) as an improper fraction.
- 4 (2 over 3) = 4 + (2 over 3)
- Addition
- Tern the integer part into a fraction
- 4 + (2 over 3) = (12 over 3) + (2 over 3) = (12 + 3 over 3) = (14 over 3)
- 4 (2 over 3) = 4 + (2 over 3)
Write (31 over 4) as a mixed number
- Divide the top number by the bottom. 1) the answers gives the whole number part. 2) the remainder goes on top of the fraction
Multiplying
- Multiply top and bottom separately. then simplify your fraction as far as possible.
- Example
- Find (8 over 5) x (7 over 12)
- Multiply top and bottom separately
- Then simplify- top and bottom both divide by 4
- Multiply top and bottom separately
- Find (8 over 5) x (7 over 12)
- Example
- Multiply top and bottom separately. then simplify your fraction as far as possible.
Divide
- Turn the second fraction upside down and multiply
- Example
- Find 2 (1 over 3) / 3 (1 over 2)
- Rewrite the mixed numbers as improper fraction
- Turn (7 over 2) upside down and multiply
- Simplify- top and bottom both divide by 7
- Turn (7 over 2) upside down and multiply
- Rewrite the mixed numbers as improper fraction
- Find 2 (1 over 3) / 3 (1 over 2)
