Rivers
  1. Processes of erosion
    1. Hydraulic action
      1. The force of the water breaks rock patrticals away from the river channel
      2. Corrasion
        1. Eroded rocks picked up by the river scrape and rub against the channel wearing it away. Most errosion happens thisway.
        2. Attrition
          1. Eroded rocks picked up by the river smash into each other and break into smaller fragments.
          2. Corrosion
            1. River water dissolves some types of rock; limestone, chalk
          3. Drainage basins
            1. Transportaition
              1. The material the river has eroded is transported downstream there are four main processes of transportation
                1. Traction
                  1. Large particles are like boulders being pushed along the river bed by the force of water
                  2. Suspension
                    1. Small particles like silt and clay are carried along by the water.
                    2. Saltation
                      1. Pebble sized particles are bounced along the river bed by the force of the water.
                      2. Soloution
                        1. Soluble materials dissolve in the water and are carried along
                    3. Deposition
                      1. Depostition is when a river drops the eroded material it's transporting
                        1. It happens when a river slows down (looses velocity)
                          1. There are few resaons why rivers slow down and deposit material
                            1. The volume of water in the river falls
                              1. The amount of eroded material in the water increases
                                1. The water is shallower e.g on the inside of a bend
                                  1. The river reaches its mouth
