  1. EARLY LIFE AND CAREER
    1. 1) Born in 1889 - Braunau - Austria. Left school with no qualifications.
      1. 2) Determined to be an artist. Hopes dashed in 1907 when he failed entrance exam to the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. In Vienna - developed his first hatred for the Jews as well as his belief in nationalism. Later moved to Munich.
        1. 3) When WW1 brike out, he enthusiastically volunteered to serve in German Army. A good soldier, won medals for bravery.
          1. 4) 1918 - badly gassed.In hospital when Armistice was signed in Nov 1918. Germany's defeat in 1918 left him v.bitter and needed a scapegoat - blamed new republic for defeat
            1. 5)Sept 1919 he joined the German Workers' Party
            2. THE NAZI PARTY 1920-23
              1. The party changed in these years.
                1. 1) Feb 1920:Party's new name: the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP) or Nazis.
                  1. 2) Hilter showed a real talent for public speaking - attracted an increasing number of followers to the Party. By 1921 he was party leader
                    1. 3) Hitler designed the Nazi Flag with swastika symbol
                      1. 4) 1921Hitler set up the Sturm Abteiling (SA) /Stormtroopers. SA would distrupt mtgs of Hitler's opponents, esp. communistsand beat up oppositions supporters
                        1. 5) Nazi Party drew a 'twenty-five point programme'. Included a promise to destroy Treaty of Versailles, communism and anti-Semitism and to give Germans a scapegoat for the defeat.
                      2. MUNICH PUTSCH 1923
                        1. CAUSES
                          1. Weimar Republic v.unpopular due to terrible effects of hyperinflation. Italian Leader, Benito Mussolini, had successfully marched on Rome the previous yr and taken over Italian gov't.
                          2. EVENTS
                            1. 8th Nov 1923 - Hitler & SA took over a Beer Hall in Munich. Following day Hilter & his followers marched on the centre of Munich and a gun battle started between them & police. Hitler fled the battle but later arrested for his part in the uprising.
                            2. RESULTS
                              1. Feb 1924 Hilter turned his trial into a propaganda success, using it to attack W.Republic whom he accused of treason.
                                1. Trial provided Hitler with nationwide publicity.
                                  1. He only served 6 mths of his 5 yr sentence. Spent most of his time dictating his autobiography Mein Kampf, to Rudolf Hess, a leading Nazi
                                    1. He also decided that in future he would try to seize power by legal methods.
                                  2. NAZI PARTY 1924-29
                                    1. Hitler reorganised the party to make it more efficient and prepared, even at street level, to fight future elections.
                                      1. Joseph Goebbels organised propaganda. He skilfully used poster, Nazi Newspapers and mtgs to put across the Nazi ideals,
