For electrolysis to be possible, the ions must be able to move
- This happens when the ionic substance is melted or dissolved in water
What happens?
- Positively charged ions move to the negative electrode
- There they gain electrons and are reduced
- Negatively charged electrons move to the positive electrode
- They then lose electrons and are oxidised
- Positively charged ions move to the negative electrode
