- Eg. social problems such as the educational failure of
children occur because in a lone-parent family, the parent
is too busy working to dedicate time to helping or
encouraging their children's study.
- New Right therefore believe that mothers
should stay at home to dedicate their time
to household work and childcare.
- Criticism: Oakley argues that the nuclear family
favoured by the new right is patriarchal and
maintains gener inequality. Women are forced to be
financially dependent on men and denied equal say.
