Skinner
- If we do something and it has a positive consequence, we are more likely to do it again
Language is acquired through imitation and positive and negative reinforcement
When a child speaks, they are rewarded.
- This reinforcement shapes the child's use of language and ensures they develop it successfully
Role of CDS
- You correct your child, and your child will remember and reproduce it
Evaluation
- Imitation plays and important role in phonological development
- All children seem to pass the same stages at the same time, regardless of the amount of reinforcement
- Children develop an understanding of rhos grammar works, therefore they are not imitating what they have learnt
- WUG test counteracts this- children haven't heard of 'WUGs'
