- Key Words 8.1
- Bible - the holy book of Christians with 66 books split into the Old Testament and the New Testament
- Decalogue – the Ten Commandments
- Church – the community of Christians (with small ‘c’ it is a place of worship)
- Conscience – an inner feeling of rightness or wrongness of an action
- Situation ethics – the idea that Christians should base moral decisions on what is the most loving thing to do
in a situation
- Human Rights – the rights and freedoms to which everyone is entitled
- Democratic processes - The ways in which all citizens can take part in government (usually
through elections)

- Why some Christians use only the Bible as a basis for making moral decisions
- 1) They believe that the Bible is the actual word of God and it is how God speaks to and guides us.
- 2) They believe it contains the Laws of God (eg the 10 commandments – the decalogue) so if they follow
these laws they are acting as God wants them to.
- 3) The Bible contains the teachings and example of Jesus who Christians believe is the Son
of God. He was sent to teach us how to live and so we should follow his teaching when
making a moral decision
- 4) It contains the teachings of some of the apostles and St Paul. These are found in the Acts of the Apostles
and in letters.
- HOWEVER
- Some Christians do not think the Bible is the most important guide for making moral decisions.
- 1) Some Christians (eg Catholics) believe the Bible is the word of God but that is needs to be interpreted for
people today by the Church.
- 2) Some Christians (eg liberal protestants) believe that the Bible was written by humans who
were inspired by God and so it contains spiritual truths. But some think that some teachings does not need to be taken literally.
- 3) Some argue that the Bible does not offer help with modern day moral issues eg euthanasia, genetic engineering.
- 4) Some Christians would say that you can use other sources of moral authority to make moral
decisions either instead of or with the Bible eg Conscience.
- 1) Some Christians (eg Catholics) believe the Bible is the word of God but that is needs to be interpreted for
people today by the Church.
- Some Christians do not think the Bible is the most important guide for making moral decisions.
- 1) They believe that the Bible is the actual word of God and it is how God speaks to and guides us.
- The Authority Of The Church and why some Christians only use Church's teachings, to make Moral decisions.
- 1) They believe God continues to speak to us through the Church and so they should follow the teachings of their
Church because they are inspired by God
- 2) They believe that the Church is the Body of Christ so Jesus is still acting in the world today through
the Church so we should follow the guidance of the Church.
- 3) The leaders in all Christian Churches have had training and have studied the Bible and other
aspects of the faith and so the members of their Churches trust that they will help them to know
God’s will.
- 4) They believe that guides the Church and following its guidance helps Christians to know they are doing the right
thing and gives them clear rules to follow
- HOWEVER
- 1) Arguments that other sources are better eg: the Bible, conscience, situation ethics.
- 2) The rules of the Church are too inflexible
- 3) The rules of the Catholic Church are made by men who have never been married – can they give
reliable and helpful guidance – for example on contraception?
