      1. = LIMESTONE HEATED WITH CLAY

      1. = CEMENT MIXED WITH SAND
    3. CONCRETE
      1. = MORTAR MIXED WITH SAND AND AGGREGATE
2. can be thermally decomposed to make new products
3. composed of the compound CALCIUM CARBONATE
  1. CaCO3
  2. is quarried and used as a building material
  3. carbonates
    1. magnesium, copper, zinc and calcium
      1. ALL thermally decompose
CALCIUM OXIDE
1. reacts with water to produce
  1. CALCIUM HYDROXIDE
    1. an alkali
      1. used to neutralise acid
    2. A SOLUTION OF CALIUM HYDROXIDE IN WATER = LIMEWATER
      1. reacts with CARBON DIOXIDE to produce CALCIUM CARBONATE
        Ca(OH)2(aq) + CO2(g) ---> CaCo3(s) + H2O(I)
      2. LIMEWATER is used to test for CARBON DIOXIDE
        CARBON DIOXIDE turns limewater cloudy
  2. CaO(s) + H2O(I) ---> Ca(OH)2(s)
CALCIUM CARBONATE AND ACID
1. carbonates react with acids to produce salt, carbon dioxide and water
2. limestone is damaged by ACID RAIN
