Electron Arrangement
The electrons in an atom are arranged in shells (the rings around the nucleus)
- The 1st shell (the ring closest to the nucleus) is allowed up to 2 electrons.
- The 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc can hold up to a maximum of 8 electrons
- The 1st shell (the ring closest to the nucleus) is allowed up to 2 electrons.
To find out how many electrons there will be in the shells you have to...
- Look at the periodic table to find out the period and the group number of the element
- Vertical = Group and Horizontal = Period
- Add the two numbers together and thats how many electrons there are on the shells
- For example... F ( Fluorine)
- Period = 2
- +
- Number of Electrons = 9
- Group = 7
- There will be 2 electrons in the first shell and 7 in the second
- Here is the finished drawing.
