Robotics and Coding For Kids

  1. Potential Challenges

    • Time
    • Budget Limits
    • Inadequate Teacher Training
    • Resistant Teachers
    • Distraction
  2. Technology Challenges

    • Network Problems
    • Device/Software Complications
    • Rapid Pace of Change
    • Security
  3. Possible Solutions

    • Time Solution: Teach Coding instead of math a couple days out of the week. Learning to program helps students math scores by building on problem solving and critical thinking skills.
    • Distraction Solution: Engaging and Challenging Lessons and use of the proper tech tools will give the teacher command of her audience.
    • Budget Limit Solutions: Applying for grants, ballot initiatives, and business partnerships.
    • Resistant Teacher Solutions: Be respectful, you aren't trying to repair any teaching methods. Be accommodating to the teacher. Listen to their wants, needs and concerns. Give them adequate training, easy to use software and plenty of time to learn how to use it properly.
    • Inadequate Teacher Training Solution: Hire specialists who know the best ways to train teachers to incorporate this type of technology in the classroom. Have the teachers take a pre-training survey to find their tech tool preferences. Use hands on approaches and allow plenty of time for face to face interactions and Q and A's.
    • Rapid Change of Pace Solutions: Use the latest Horizon Report and Digital Toolkit, and the National Education Technology Plan.
    • Network Problem Solutions: Use quality resources like CoSN's School Wi-Fi- Buyers Guide which will help you choose the best equipment and features for your school.
    • Security Problem Solutions: Make sure the district has an AUP ( Acceptable Use Policy) in place. Make sure students and parents sign stating they have read it. Stress the importance of not sharing passwords and private information. Use nicknames instead of student names when on the web. Use websites and software that is kid-safe. Place computers where teachers can always see the screens. Give students and parents resources on internet safety and Digital Citizenship.
    • Device/Software Complications Solutions: Use well know and reliable software and devices. Use software that has regular updates and know how to access help if needed. Ask your schools computer teacher, or other faculty members for help. Make sure students understand the importance of using the device properly.
