Feline immunodeficiency virus causes an AIDS like illness in cats
Expansion of lymph nodes and a range of other clinical signs
First step in viral replication is binding to the surface receptor - once bound have a potential for therapeutic intervention (something that will block viral entry and stop virus replication)
HIV and FIV share similar cellular targets - primary targets are T cells and monocyte macrophages (FIV may interact with a molecule like CD4 on T helper cells)
Human CD4 expressed on mouse cell, still not susceptible to HIV (co receptor missing)
*CXCR4 - co receptor in FIV (promotes cell to cell fusions) - antibodies block fusion process = interaction is specific
CC-R5 in HIV
CXCR4 antagonists block FIV infection - however something is missing, pattern of CXCR4 infection isn't susceptible
FIV and HIV have developed same disease but use different molecules
*CD134 is the primary receptor for FIV - humans cant contract FIV from cats as FIV cant use human receptors
