The inspector calls:
final speech analysis: "one Eva smith is gone- but there are millions and millions and millions of Eva Smiths and John Smiths still left with us, with their lives, their hopes and fears, their suffering and chance of happiness, all intertwined with our lives." - here Priestley is highlighting that Eva Smith is actually a symbol, a representation of the bottom class. The story hasn't finished with her death because there are millions more people like her who still can be helped, and that is essential we all take responsibility for our actions towards others, including the bottom class. The surname 'Smith' is one of the most common in Britain; this highlights that Eva is being used as a symbol or message.
This quote is followed by one of the most important quotes in the play "we don't live alone. We are members of one body- we are responsible for each other" These lines sum up Priestley's message of social responsibility. The inspector this not as the character that many will see him to be, but as the author reincarnated into his books as the inspector to tell his own characters the wrong in their ways - to be continued
