Abduction & Adduction

Flexion and Extension

Elevation & Depression

Rotation & Circumduction

Supination & Pronation

Dorsiflexion & Plantar Flexion

Abduction - movement of a limb away from midline of the body .

Adduction - movement of limb toward the midline of the body

During abduction, limb move outward away from the side of the body

abductor - muscle that move body part away

during adduction, limb move inward toward the side of the body

Adductor- muscle that move body part toward

Flexion - decreasing the angle btw 2 bone by bending a limb at a joint

Extension - decreasing the angle btw 2 bone / straightening out of a limb

Hyperextension - extreme tension of limb beyond normal limit

during flexion, knee or elbow is bent

flexor muscle bend a limb at a joint

during extension, knee or elbow is straightened

extensor muscle straightens a limb at a joint

Elevation - act of raising or lifting a body part. Example : levator anguli oris -muscle of the face raise the corner of the mouth into a smile

Depression - act as lowering a body part. depressor angulis oris: lower the corner of the mouth into a frown. Depressor - muscle lower a body part

Rotation - circular movement around an axis such as the shoulder joint

circumduction - circular movement at the far end of a limb. example: swingin motion of far end of the arm

Rotator muscle - turn a body part on its axis

rotator cuff - group of muscle & their tendon that hold the head of the humerous securely in place as it rotate within the shoulder joint

Supination - act of rotating the arm or leg so that the palm of the hand / sole foot it turned forward/upward

Pronation - act of rotating the arm/leg so that hand/sole foot turn down ward/back

Dorsiflexion - movement that bend the foot upward at the ankle. pointing the toes & foot upward decrease the angle btw the top of the foot & the front leg

Plantar flexion - movement bend the foot downward at the angkle. pointing the toes & foot downward increase the angle btw the top of the foot
