piaget studied children's cognitive development. he believed that schemas were the key to cognitive development and he described how they developed as the child grew up. schemas are blocks of knowledge that develop in response to our experiences of the world. he also believed that babies are born with simple schemas. As the baby grows the schema develops.
Schemas develop through assimilation or accommodation. assimilation occurs when new information is added to an existing schema. for example, babies will use the sucking schema with fingers and other things that they put into their mouth. However, in order to suck through a straw, the basic sucking schema needs to be changed. this is called accommodation.
