1. “Media use may also have
the benefit of helping individuals expand their horizons. Transportation
creates an openness to new information. By leading individuals to appreciate
truths about themselves and their world, transportation can bring about
transformations that endure in some way once individuals return from the
narrative world to their everyday reality” (Green et al. 2004, pp. 317-318).
2. “Academic film studies
has been focused almost entirely on ideological studies of film, such that the
means by which films generate an audience experience colored with emotion and
affect is unimportant, unless it can be clearly shown to relate to ideology. To
my mind, such a view not only devalues the experience of movie viewing (as
important only in relation to class, gender, race, etc.) and fails to see the
centrality of emotion in the ideological work of movies, but also mischaracterizes
emotional experience as necessarily subjective and idiosyncratic, as though
emotions were not subject to causality” (Plantinga, 2009, pp. 4-5).
3. “However, through his
artificial relationship a transformation of self occurs. In his media consumption
and fantasy he sloughs off his own “inadequate” personality and turns into
James Bond. Here, in fantasy, the individual’s consciousness is “possessed” by
the media self; it colors perception, patterns decision making, and structures
social behavior” (Caughey, 1984, p. 59).
4. “Because media, and
movies in particular, may enable the development of new templates not only for
broader lived experience but also for hoped for or feared possible selves
(Markus & Nurius, 1986), they may be particularly relevant to the
developmental tasks of adolescence and emerging adulthood. As teens navigate
seemingly contradictory and extreme shifts in mood, relationships, and identity
(Harter, 2012), media models may function to inform and validate such shifts,
for better or worse.” (Greenwood & Long, 2014, p. 2).
