5.1 Notes by Alexie Smith and Sarah Kraut
5.1.1-Contagious
In this unit we looked at another of Anna's medical history documents, from this we learned that Anna had a UTI from a catheter during a hospital stay. Some of the tests ran to see what kind of bacteria she had been infected with are:
Urinalysis
Lysine Decarboxyl
Motility
Citrate
In the end we found out that she had been infected with serratia marcescens.
5.1.2-Infectious Disease Agents
In this unit we learned about the different types of infectious agents which are:
Bacteria-a member of a large group of unicellular microorganisms that have cell walls but lack organelles and an organized nucleus, including some that can cause disease
Viruses-an infective agent that typically consists of a nucleic acid molecule in a protein coat, is too small to be seen by light microscopy, and is able to multiply only within the living cells of a host
Fungus-any of a group of unicellular, multicellular, or syncytial spore-producing organisms feeding on organic matter, including molds, yeast, mushrooms, and toadstools
Protozoa- were defined as unicellular protists with animal-like behavior, such as movement
Helminthes-a parasitic worm; a fluke, tapeworm, or nematode
Prions-a small petrel of southern seas, having a wide bill fringed with comblike plates for feeding on planktonic crustaceans
We also learned how each of these infectious agents' modes of transportation, how they are treated, and some disease examples.
5.1.3- Isolating Bacteria
In this unit we learned that in order to test bacteria you must specific tests. We also learned the different ways to identify bacteria. Bacteria identification falls into 4 categories:
Size
Margins
Elevation
Color
We also learned about Aseptic Technique. Aseptic Technique refers to a procedure performed under sterile conditions. Having all your equipment sterile is important because you don't want to add more uncontrolled variables to your test.
5.1.5-Bacteria Identification
In this unit I learned the different kinds of tests that can be ran to determine what kind of bacteria sample has been collected. We also learned what a Microbiologist is and what he or she does. Another career we researched is a Medical Laboratory Technician.
Microbiologists study microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, algae, fungi, and some types of parasites. They try to understand how these organisms live, grow, and interact with their environments.
Medical laboratory technicians collect samples and perform tests to analyze body fluids, tissue, and other substances.
5.1.4-Gram Staining
In this unit we learned how to gram stain. We use gram staining to further identify bacteria. We learned the three basic morphologies of bacteria which are:
Bacillus (Rod)
Coccus (Sphere)
Spirillium (Spiral)
Here is the link for the power point on how to gram stain and what it does

5.1.6-Lines of Defense
In this unit we learned how the immune system works. Parts of the immune system are:
Non-specific defenses
Specific defenses
Skin
Nose Hair
Mucus Inflammation
B-cells
Antibodies
T-cells
Phagocytes
These all have a specific role in the immune system, but overall help fight diseases in the body
