About Health, Disease and Drugs
GoConqr OriginalWhat this unit covers
The unit sits in the Health and Disease strand of Biology and natural sciences. Most of what is listed follows infection and response: pathogens, how disease spreads, and how the body and plants defend themselves. The mind map Communicable diseases splits the topic into fungal, viral, bacterial and protist diseases, then moves on to human and plant defence systems.
The second big theme is lifestyle and drugs. The mind map The Effects of Smoking covers short-term and long-term effects, passive smoking and effects on children. The AQA GCSE Biology B1.3 Medicine and drugs mind map explains that a drug is a chemical that affects the central nervous system and body chemistry, and how medicinal drugs are developed and tested.
Where to start
- Open Communicable diseases for the overall picture.
- Read Pathogens: Viruses, Bacteria, Fungi & Protists to see how each type causes illness.
- Move to Biology - Infection and response, which includes monoclonal antibodies.
- Finish with the drugs and smoking maps.
Using maps, flashcards and quizzes together
Read a map first to get the structure. Then work through a flashcard deck such as GCSE AQA Biology - Infection and Response, which asks what pathogens and communicable diseases are. Last, take a quiz like Infectious Diseases or Communicable Diseases and note which answers you missed. Go back to the map for those branches only.
The resources mention exams including GCSE Biology, AQA GCSE Biology, IGCSE Biology, A-level Biology, OCR Biology A-level and IB, so check which specification you follow and choose the matching titles. Teachers can use the slide sets and notes as ready-made starting points for lessons.
Make it your own
Once you have worked through a few resources, build your own mind map or flashcard deck from the gaps you found, and keep it for your next revision session.
Frequently asked questions
Which resource should I open first?
Start with the Communicable diseases mind map. It lays out pathogens, how disease spreads, prevention, the four types of disease and human and plant defences. After that, the Pathogens: Viruses, Bacteria, Fungi & Protists mind map adds detail on each pathogen type.
What do the drug and smoking resources cover?
The AQA GCSE Biology B1.3 Medicine and drugs mind map covers the use and abuse of drugs and how medicinal drugs are tested. The Effects of Smoking mind map looks at short-term and long-term effects, passive smoking and effects on children. Drug Abuse flashcards are also listed.
Which exams do these resources suit?
The listed resources mention GCSE Biology, GCSE Combined Science, IGCSE Biology, AQA and OCR Biology, AS and A-level Biology, and IB. Most are at secondary level, so they suit school students. Check titles for your exam board before you start.
Are the resources free, and who made them?
Every resource here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.
Is there a quiz I can try straight away?
Yes. The page lists over 120 quizzes, including Communicable Diseases, Infectious Diseases, Keeping Healthy - Biology 1 Revision GCSE and Lifestyle Diseases. Try one after reading a map, then review the questions you got wrong.
Can teachers use this page?
Yes. Teachers can pick from mind maps, notes, flashcard decks and slide sets, such as the slide set Pathogens - Overview, and share them with classes as ready-made material for revision or recap.
