The term philosophy is derived from the two Greek words, which literally mean “the love of wisdom.” It was coined by Pythagoras and during one of his travels he was asked by a king whether he was a wise man and what his occupation was. Pythagoras replied that he was not a wise man but just a lover of wisdom. Understanding what philosophy is makes us realize our worth as thinking being and enhances our appreciation of what really life is.

This lesson deals with the meaning of philosophy, its different branches, and Logic as an integral part of philosophy

For the Ancient Greeks, philosophy is the sum-total of human knowledge. It primarily asks the questions: What is man in this world of pandemic? What is he expected to do amidst this chaos brought about by this pandemic? Is there a God? And if there is, Does God understand our pain and sufferings?

A subject matter of philosophy is so vast; it is limited only by the capacity of the human mind to ask new questions and to formulate old ones in some novel way. As a result, it is filled with intellectual excitement of controversy and disputation, a dialectic of argument and counterargument. A true philosopher cannot give blind faith to the authority of the great philosophers of the past and merely respect their propositions; rather, each age is confronted with task of asking the eternal questions and answering them anew the way we asked the above questions.

The seven major branches of philosophy include: Logic, Ethics, Aesthetics, Cosmology, Epistemology, Theodicy and Metaphysics. As philosophy is so vast it embraces other disciplines not mention above. The above subjects might bring us to the abyss and lose our sanity but I would like to believe that philosophy is a kind of mental training invaluable in our present time
