Kaplan et al. (2014)
Found greater bold activity in the HC for novel relative to familiar environments in the HC and parahippocampal areas.
Object novelty was associated with increased activity in posterior hippocampus and extending into the anterior hippocampus into the amygdala.
Mid posterior HC more sensitive to environmental novelty.
Amygdala showed increased object novelty at the beginning but then activity declined over multiple sessions.
Unclear whether HC encodes novel contexts or content within contexts. ( as in some studies have shown that the HC responds to isolated contexts, while others show that the HC responds to content/context combinations. possible convergence zone?
Unclear, however, how MTL structures are involved in novelty for objects and environments during a spatial learning task.
Is the Human HC invovled in novelty detection? The results are mixed. Some studies have also implicated other MTL regions such as the perihinal cortex within object novelty. Prerhinal and parahippocampal cortex in novel context identification. Amygdala has also been implicated and it is thus unclear how different MTL structures are invovled in novelty.
