Perception

PSYC1B Flashcards

Cognitive Development

Individual Differences

Abnormalities

Why we study perception; to find a solution to a problem for example how bright do the traffic lights need to be to be seen by the majority. As well intellectual curiosity :)

Approaches to study Perception: 1. Psychological 2. Biological 3. Theoretical

Perception can be described as; External stimuli translated into patterns of electrical activity which can be processed by the brain. The perceivers experience of the stimuli will prompt response.

Psychological include phenomenal / naturalistic experiences, however this is subject to the understanding of that experience by the person so not the best way. The best psychological way to study of perception is through experiments.

Biological approaches to study of perception include: - lesion technique, where part of the brain has/is damaged. Evoked potential technique which is the measure of electrical activity in the brain through use of FMRI, CAT and PET Scans. Single cell technique which is the stimulation of section of neurons in the brain to trigger a response. The brain would need to be exposed.

To perceive what is happening in our environment we use our senses. Categorised as either a Far Sense or Near Sense

Far senses include 1) Sight (Vision) 2) Hearing (Auditory). The far senses provide warning of any potential impending dangers

Near senses execute an immediate response to the stimuli. These near senses include 1. Touch 2. Taste 3. Smell
