Methods to Store Energy
Classification of Energy
Energy in Fields
Forces in Fields
Battery = Positive electrolyte + Negative electrolyte + Electrolyte
Solar and Hydro : Renewable energy sources
Size, Safety, and Duration*
Lithium Ion batteries found in phones. Carbon & Water used to make them safer
Saltwater batter: Can be recharged.
Potential Energy: Stored / Energy of Position.
Kinetic Energy - Moving energy (not stored)
Law of Conservation of Energy = The law of conservation of energy states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed - only converted from one form of energy to another.
GPE = PE = mgh
Mechanical Energy - stored in the deformation of an object
PEg = mgDelta h
Chemical Energy - energy stored in the chemical bonds between atom
Electric Potential Electric Potential Difference – Voltage + area - pulls electrons - area - pushes electrons
Nuclear Energy - Energy stored within the nucleus of atoms, energy holding protons togethe
Mechanical Energy - everyday objects in motion
Electricity – electrical current
Heat energy
Waves – transfers energy from one area to another. Energy (a) the wave’s amplitude
Electromagnetic Waves - oscillations in an electric and magnetic fields.
LOL Diagrams - https://www.physicsclassroom.com/class/energy/Lesson-2/Bar-Chart-Illustrations
Work - transfer of energy via force - happens when force is applied to an opposing force over a distance
Work : Conservative force - Total work done in moving particle is independent (electrostatic/magnetic)
Non-Conservative Force - Always change the total mechanical energy of the system, sometimes increase speed.
Qantifying Energy - Measured using Joules (J) - Calcucations: PE = mgh KE = 1/2mv^2 GPE = weight x height
Energy in Food - Kilocalories (Kcal) Calculations: Energy (joules) = Mass of water (g) × 4.2 (J/gºC) × Temperature increase (ºC)
Electric: "This electric potential energy per charge is known as Electrical Potential or voltage.
Mechanical Energy
Gravitational: Work done to an object with energy: GPE
Storage of mass in a gravitational field.
Electrical Energy
Storage of charge in an electrical field
Electromagnetic Energy
Energy that is emitted through electrical and magnetic waves.
Electrical Resistance
Ohms Law - strength of a direct current is proportional to potential difference and inversely to resistance : Ohm's Law I = U/R
Gravitational Field - all objects with mass
Storing Charge/Energy in Capacitors
Electric Field - all objects with charges
Magnetic Field - all moving charges/ interaction of fields
Batteries > Capacitors : Batteries store more for longer.
Oxidation Is about Loss of electrons and Reduction Is about Gain of electrons
Earths Magnetic Field - Needed because the field shields the earth from solar particles and directs our compasses
Faradays Law : When magnetic field changes, it creates voltage and difference in EPE, creating current.
Batteries discharge by: "During discharge, the battery functions as a galvanic cell, where chemical energy is converted into electrical energy. "
Recharge: Oxidation and reduction processes reverse, and electrical energy is reverted to chemical.
